Am I Addicted to a Soap Opera?
I often hear from Woven Branches fans that they are the opposite of a fan of the soap opera genre. However, they can't seem to get enough of my little Southern Serial. What gives?
I always try to dig a little deeper into the psyche of my readers. Hey, it's great market research (ha!). I usually find that as young children, these "non-soap ooera fans" were raised by a parent or grandparent who regularly watched Days of Our Lives or Another World, cheered on Luke and Laura on General Hospital, loved to hate the conniving Erica Kane on All My Children, or secretly wanted to be a member of the Ryan family on Ryan's Hope.
Others remember the family watching the prime time titans of the soap opera world: Dallas, Falcon Crest, Dynasty, Knots Landing. These shows were must-see TV throughout the 1980s and paved the way for later updated nighttime soaps like Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 90210.
Nostalgia, comfort, familiarity...that's what soap operas are all about. Whether one wants to admit that his/her Woven Branches addiction is a soap opera addiction, I think it's safe to say that my book series has become a popular guilty pleasure for a lot of folks.
I am completely cool with that.
